In Summation:
- Stop using the word ‘Gay’ in a derogatory manner
- Stop using the word ‘Gay’ to describe bad things
- Think about what you are really saying:
- Could a better adjective, which doesn’t marginalize and hurt a group of people, fit here?
- Could these words hurt someone close to me, by associating a part of their identity with bad, distasteful, or annoying things?
-This has been a PSA from your friendly neighborhood Lesbian
Disclaimer: This list is far from complete. Other examples of words which shouldn’t ever really be used, in any circumstances, include “Faggot” and also “Dyke”.
I also understand that it takes time for people’s speech patterns to change. Everyone was an idiot when they were younger, and many people got in the habit of saying these negative and hurtful things on a common basis. I understand that people try, but these things sometimes slip out in conversation. All I ask is for you to try, and then maybe try a little harder. Words hurt.
